Congrats on your new home! Are you having trouble visualizing everything you need to do before you take possession of your new home? Now that you're preparing to move, here is a comprehensive list of things to consider as you are working up to possession day:

Prepping for moving day:

  • Sweep through to throw things away
  • Designate an area where you are going to start piling packed boxes (garage)
  • Pack everything that you know you won’t use until the new house.
  • Organize all your belongings and label your boxes
  • Update and maintain a task list calendar for moving requirements
  • Stop buying groceries a week before you leave. Be conscious of what is in your freezer/fridge and what will go with you.

4 weeks out

  • Notify everyone you want to help you move. Amazingly enough, they don’t just appear on moving day.
  • Make sure you have a moving truck booked. There are times of the month they can be hard to find.
  • Start contacting services to advise of your new address for Utility Hookups and cancelling service at your current address. (NOTE: DO NOT SCHEDULE FOR POSSESSION DAY) Schedule service pick up at your new home on a day when you won't already have a million things to worry about.
  • Notify schools if necessary
  • Set up mail forwarding at Canada Post.
  • Start removing pictures so that it can be ready for patching and painting where necessary.
    • Check that you have matching paint or have some made from a chip
  • Anything else?

3 weeks out

  • Contact your Mortgage Advisor to see if they need anything to ensure documents are being sent to your lawyer.
  • Make sure home insurance on the new house is setup as you will need proof of this when signing documents (if you are purchasing a new home).
  • Take care of any organization you need to do for cleaning of your current property for possession including pet waste.

2 weeks out

  • If you haven’t heard from your lawyer, please get in touch. You will want to have documents signed this week if possible.
  • Collect all keys from anyone who may have one.
  • Meet with your lawyer and get everything signed off on purchase and sale.

1 week out

  • Pack down to “camping level” so that everything is ready to go.
  • Make a list of any codes and information about your home to leave for your buyers that they will need to access things like their garage, mailbox, alarm system, etc.

Moving is stressful, but if you plan as much as you can in advance and stay organized, it will be a lot easier on you. Follow our tips for a successful moving day and contact us if you have any questions at all!
